The last thing you want to deal with in the middle of winter is a broken heating system. After a long day out in the cold weather, you just want to go home to a warm house. However, if your HVAC heating system isn’t working, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot before you have to call professional heating contractors for help.
Is your HVAC heating not working? Try these troubleshooting tips from our heating contractors to get the heat back on.
Thermostat Settings
It might seem silly, but the first thing to do is check your thermostat settings. Check that the thermostat is set to “heat” rather than “cool” or “fan” and that the temperature is set warmer than the current temperature of the room. If you have your heat set to a schedule, check that you are at the correct point in the cycle and rest or preprogram your schedule if necessary.
Circuit Breaker
If your thermostat or heating system is not working at all, it could be a problem with the circuit breaker. Check your electrical panel and look for tripped breakers. If the breaker connected to your heat is tripped, reset it, and your heat should come back on.
Air Filter
When was the last time you replaced the filter in your HVAC system? A clogged filter can restrict airflow and prevent your HVAC system from heating your home. You should replace your filter every three months, so if it’s been a while, replacing the filter may do the trick.
Vents
An HVAC system heats or cools your home by blowing air through a series of vents. If any of the vents are obstructed, the system can’t circulate the heated or cooled air. Check all your vents to ensure they are open and unobstructed.
